The siren sounds up to 7 seconds for each lightning detection so it's easy to hear over outdoor sports play and splashy pool play noise.
Lightning can strike up to 15 miles around a passing storm. Thunder can be heard only about 8 miles away (under good quiet conditions). By the time you hear thunder you have been in danger of being lightning struck for quite a while without even knowing it!
This lightning detector mounts lower to the ground on a 5 foot pole. You don't need a tall permanent pole. It can be easily moved if desired. Or just leave it set up all year long. It is weather proof.

The Lightning Alert ® features a sturdy mounting water-proof lightning sensor.
The lightning sensor detects the most common form of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. It also detects in-cloud lightning at local ranges.
The Lightning Alert® allows you to control the sensor range by how high the sensor is mounted, a very useful feature allowing you to tailor the system to your local area.
Most users should mount the sensor on a 5-foot pole for local detection range out to @ 30 miles.
CAUTION: We recommend no less than 20 miles range, lightning can shoot out and strike 15 miles from a storm.
Sensor features quick-connect binding post connections for easy setup.
Set up is easy and fool-proof. The sensor cannot be damaged by accidental short-circuit (when powered by the included 9-Volt solar battery pack). Sensor has built-in current limiting and reverse current protection and electrostatic protection to prevent accidental damage.

Do I need a siren loudness booster? - Is your play area more than 300 feet long or away from where the lightning detector will be placed? If "yes", then most likely "yes" you will need the siren to be louder if your play area has a lot of noise.

Switches 12 Volts 2 Amps.
This 12-Volt 2-Amp relay switch controller will power a siren extremely loudly at 12 volts. It can also power 12 volt lamps and 12 volt fountain pumps.
Maximum current rating 2 amps at 12 volts DC.
Just connect the two trigger wires directly across the siren connections. The Isolated Switch Controller will switch your controlled device using your separate 12-volt battery. Will switch items requiring between 3 volts to 12 volts.

An example of using this 12-volt switch controller to power a 12-volt 1.5 amp water fountain pump. Water flows when lightning is detected!
You could power an extra loud 12-volt siren and flashing strobe lights or other 12-volt items when lightning is detected.
Use low voltage -battery power- only for safety! Water and home electricity don't mix!
This tester lets you easily test your lightning alarm. Checks the battery, siren, and lightning sensor: Generates internal static discharges -miniature lightning flashes- that trigger the lightning detector. No batteries needed: Simply shake the tester within 5 feet of the lightning sensor. The alarm will sound loudly if the system is working correctly.

The YLD3B is easy to connect together. The modular components go together easily, and allow flexibility in customizing your system. The modular design allows changes to be made and parts added for personal customization. The diagram below shows how to wire the system together after mounting it on a 5-foot pole.
Just mount the system parts on a pole and connect and wrap the wires neatly around the pole. Easy modular design.
When mounted this high (4 feet) the system will detect to 20 miles away.
When mounted this high (about 10 feet) the system will detect over 50 miles away.
Sliding the sensor down on the metal pole by about 6 inches will reduce the range if the system needs to be mounted high up.
The system can also be mounted on a square wood post (instead of a metal pole), if a small ground rod is used to maintain earth ground.
Bolt from the Blue: Also called "Superbolt Lightning". A type of lightning that shoots out away from a thunderstorm to strike the ground some distance away, up to 15 miles away, or more. A thunderstorm does not need to be overhead for lightning to strike you.
Lightning: A sudden and dangerous electrical discharge from a thunderstorm cloud. Most lightning flashes are several miles long and carry millions of volts. Death or permanent severe injury can result from being struck by lightning.
Lightning Sensor: A weather instrument that detects lightning flashes. Most units work by detecting invisible electromagnetic energy from lightning strikes instead of the visible light.
Thunderstorm: An atmospheric disturbance made up of wind, water, and ice, where in millions of volts of static electricity are generated through a natural separation of water droplets and ice crystals by upward wind currents. Thunderstorms begin as rising currents of air usually in the day time due to solar heating. Other factors can cause storms to form if moist humid air is forced upward into the cooler atmosphere layers.
