The system can be mounted on a pole. The pole does not need to be high up, the unit will work even as low as 3 feet above ground. A lightweight folding camera tripod can also be used to mount the system for easy transport.

Radio Shack stores have a 5-foot metal pole that fits this tripod. Or just mount it directly on the 5-foot pole.
The system features a sturdy lightning sensor. Only 4 inches diameter. Supplied with mounting clamp.
The lightning sensor detects both cloud-to-ground lightning and in-cloud lightning. Detects from every direction, including directly overhead.
The sensor detects the most common form of lightning that starts at the beginning stages of most thunderstorms.
Mounting elevation above local ground level determines detection range. Most users mount the lightning sensor 3 to 5 feet above ground to give 15 to 35 miles range. Your range may vary depending on local surroundings. Start out at 5 feet to ensure good range. If it is found that the range is too great, drop it down a foot.
Lightning can strike up to 15 miles away from a passing storm so don't drop the range down too low!
The good news is that you don't need to put this lightning sensor on a tall pole to get decent detection range! This keeps the system in the "easily portable" category.
Features recessed binding post connections for quick connections and eliminates hard-wire connections that fray up.
The lightning sensor is static protected and reverse connection protected. Current limiting allows sensor to withstand brief short circuit if wired wrong accidentally. (The 9-volt NiMH battery provided will not harm the sensor if wired backwards). So you can't mess it up by mis-wiring it. Feel free to customize your system without worry about wiring mistakes!
3-wire connection (only 2 wires are actually used at a time). You can select: 'steady' tone or 'yelp' tone depending on which 2 of the 3 wires you connect.

Do I need a siren loudness booster? - Is your play area more than 100 feet long or away from where the lightning detector will be placed? If "yes", then most likely "yes" you will need the siren to be louder if your play area has a lot of noise.
Extends the siren "ON" time and makes the siren volume GREATLY LOUDER for each lightning detection to allow it to be heard "loud-and-clear" over outdoor sports play noise at a distance.

Lightning Sensors are weather instruments that give early warning of approaching lightning strikes.
You set the lightning detection range by how high up you mount the sensor above ground level.
Mount sensor 4 feet to 5 feet high for average local range of 20 to 30 miles.
Mount sensor 10 feet high for average of 60 miles range. Max range will be up to 100 miles.
Mount sensor 15 feet high for up to 120 miles range for the stronger C-G lightning strikes.
Estimated ranges may vary at your individual location depending on your local terrian, and local surroundings. Just mount sensor slightly higher or lower to adjust range if needed.
It is important to detect lightning early and we recommend no less than 20 miles detection range to give enough time to take cover from fast moving storms.
This 4-foot high installation gets up to 30 miles range when strong (big) lightning strikes are coming. Otherwise the range is around 20 miles or less for average storms.
Simply increasing the height to 5 feet greatly increases the detection range out to about 50 miles to 75 miles for the big strikes in severe storms.
This particular unit pictured is installed with added modifications to control a small water fountain pump and landscape lights (all powered by a 12-volt marine battery and 500mA solar panel not shown in photo).
