Lightning Alert®
CG Lightning Strike Sensors
and alarm accessories

Lightning Sensor Overview:

We sell lightning detector parts and supplies. See table below for list of lightning sensors and accessories below on this page.

  • Build a lightning detector! Detect lightning strikes approaching your home area!

  • These brand new cloud-to-ground lightning sensors are ready for use in your private or commercial lightning detector system.

  • Suitable for many applications: warning of approaching active lightning strikes, weather research, power shut down applications, robotic control triggering, or just-for-the-fun-of-it, etc.

  • Lightning sensors are not just for serious lightning detection. You can have fun too! Animate your yard with motorized home-made yard art that "comes to life" each time lightning is detected: fountains that spray, objects that move or spin, lamps, sound effects play. Add some unique-ness to your landscape! Your yard art becomes a thunderstorm warning system!

  • Detects cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Senses approaching thunderstorms by detecting electromagnetic pulses created by lightning strikes between cloud and earth.

  • Low supply voltage range from 6 volts to 12 volts DC.

  • Very low standby current consumption of less than 1 uA (1 microamps, a 9-volt battery will last over 1 year on standby if driving a buzzer).

  • When stimulated by lightning's electromagnetic pulses the lightning sensor outputs a pulse of current. See individual sensor specs for properties. The alarm circuit is activated each detection.

  • Typical detection range is approximately 30 miles when mounted only 5-feet above ground level. Range can be adjusted lower by shielding it with metal or by mounting it lower (less range) or higher (more range).

  • Mounts low to the ground about 5 feet, no need to erect a tall pole or climb on your roof. This makes it transportable!

  • Detects the most common form of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. It also detects in-cloud lightning at local ranges.

  • Supplied with 3 feet of wire cable.

  • Weather proof, Water proof, electrostatic protected, burn-out resistant, and completely sealed for trouble-free performance.

  • Small size: 17.5 inches long by 2.25 inch diameter (widest at mounting base).

  • Sturdy Mount Base on sensor allows mounting sensor securely to your pole. You supply hose clamps or U-Clamps.

  • Works with alarm accessories below on this page, or supply your own alarm parts.

    The Lightning Sensors:

We have several lightning sensors to meet your alarm needs. Some sensors are well suited to driving sirens. Others are great for driving low-volume beeper buzzers on indoor weather stations.

Some sensors may allow externally adjusting the alarm "ON" time. Other sensor's "ON" times are factory pre-set. Actual output pulse length may vary by up to 50%, depending on alarm current load pulled through sensor. If pulling near maximum load (60 mA) then timing length is automatically shortened by the sensor to approximately 50% of max time value.

This table shows the overview of all the lightning sensors. See individual lightning sensor information below on this page.

IMPORTANT!: See online instruction book before buying a sensor based on alarm time only. Alarm times may vary depending on the alarm circuit design and voltage supply for that individual project. See the time tables for individual lightning sensors in the online instruction book for each alarm design.

    3 wires
    $ 36.00$ 10.00

The CGS-2160 allows adjusting the output pulse from 1 second to over 60 seconds. You can customize how long the alarm sounds. An external variable resistor (not supplied) in the range of 0 to 10 meg-ohms externally controls the alarm time. Higher resistance give longer time. This sensor gives a good long loud alarm from a siren. It also allows the sensor to drive motorized items, such as water fountains that spray when lightning is detected. You can adjust the timing to give the pump motor time to start up and run a while. The sensor does not directly drive a motor. You will need our relay. See online instruction book for how to drive a 12 volt motor. This lightning sensor comes with 3 feet of individual wires for connection: Red. Black. Green.

Also available: Special order output times. After reviewing the lightning sensors AND the online instruction book...and....Just don't see the time period you want? Specify desired time special order. It is best to try the CGS-2160 first to get your time set in your alarm application, then measure your external control resistor value (exactly, please). Then a 2-wire sensor (instead of the adjustable 3 wire type) can then be specially made with that time length for your application. Special order time-defined sensors are $ 36.00 + s/h.

    Siren Alarm
OUTDOOR SIREN ALARM WITH 2 SELECTABLE TONES

The siren sounds each lightning detection.

Easily heard over splashy pool play noise outdoors.

Just mount the lightning sensor and solar power battery pack module. Connect siren to solar power pack's color-coded terminals. Easy!

This weather-proof outdoor siren lets your lightning alarm sound loudly for each lightning detection.

Size of Siren: 5.9 inches deep. 4.7 inches port opening.

Supplied with U-Clamp for mounting on a standard-sized TV antenna pole.

    SIREN # 1 is $ 27.00 + s/h.

9 Volt Solar Cell Power Pack

This weather-proof solar charging unit keeps your siren lightning alarm working 24-7! Binding Post Connections. Comes with U-bolt clamp for mounting.

This solar power pack will keep your outdoor lightning detector system working. Solar cell recharges the included standard 9-volt NiMH battery. Includes pole mounting clamp.

Maximum power output rating: 9 volts at 150 mA for an hour. (Will drive one siren directly through the lightning sensor. See online instruction book for how to use this item).

Maximum solar cell output: 12 volts at 20 mA in full sun. (For charging only 9-volt batteries).

Will run your siren lightning detector all night, recharges in the sun light the next day.

Quick charge battery technology is ready to work within minutes on a sunny day.

Allows the system to run from the battery at night and on cloudy days (the system will operate on standby [no detections] for about 2 weeks without sunshine).

    Solar Power Pack 9 Volts.

    Solarpack9V # 2 is $ 60.00 + s/h.

12 volt 40 amp Relay Switch

This 40 amp relay can be used to switch power to 12 volt items. Easy to use, only 4 pins. Normally Open connections.

Requires 100 mA, minimum, at 12 volts to switch ON. Typical current draw at 12 volts is 130 mA. Switch OFF current [drop out] once pulled in is 50 mA.

Large connector pins to handle your current load. This relay will allow driving your siren "full blast"! It is also great for switching 12 volt lamps and 12 volt motors.

For switching low DC voltages of less than 15 volts.
    Not for switching house current.

    RELAY # 1 is $ 5.00 + s/h.

How a relay works: Current is applied from the battery to the coil by the alarm circuit. The magnetic field created by the coil pulls two switch contacts together. Your siren or lamp turns "ON". When power is removed from the coil, the magnetic field goes away and the switch contacts spring back apart. Your lamp or siren turns "OFF" until the next time.

  • See online instruction book: CLICK HERE for how to use a relay in your lightning detector.
